Volunteer

Volunteers are the heartbeat of IGI. Last year, volunteers gave 6,350 hours of their time helping us harvest food, prepare meals, deliver food to those in need of food support, and keep our Island Food Pantry running. We could not do the work we do for the community without the help of our amazing volunteers.

Island Food Pantry

Volunteers at the Island Food Pantry assume many different roles. We need help sorting and stocking donations, working with clients to select their food, picking up food from donation boxes across the Island and outreaching local businesses for food drives.

Gleaning

Gleaning volunteers harvest produce from Island farms to share with the community. We spend extra time removing old leaves, checking for spots, and handling produce with care.

IGI provides tools, instruction, and an experienced Field Captain. Most gleans last about an hour and a half and we have several gleans each week during summer and fall harvest seasons. Volunteers keep a share of the harvest for themselves. New volunteers are always welcome. Glean once a year, or every week!

Prepared Meals

Work as a team in our commercial kitchen to wash, chop, freeze and pickle local produce. A ServeSafe manager leads processing events. We share this food with the Councils on Aging, Wampanoag Woman’s Center, MV Hospital, Island Food Pantry, MV Community Services and other organizations helping Islanders in need of food support.
