Prepared Meals
IGI’s Prepared Meals Program uses locally donated or rescued produce and meat which comes from our IGI gleans, local farmers and grocery stores. Volunteers are the heartbeat of this operation and during the busy fall season we rely on twenty-four people to help us glean, prepare and distribute. Our processing program would not be possible without our volunteers.
IGI hires local chefs who cook and collaborate on what we can prepare from our rescued or donated product. Three varieties of meals are made each week: vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes. Between 200-300 meals are frozen and distributed weekly to Island Councils on Aging, the Island Food Pantry, MV Family Center, homeless shelters, libraries, the VNA, Hospice and individuals and families in need.
Recently, our processing program has begun to make baby food. We use simple ingredients and add only water if necessary. This food helps new parents introduce, fresh healthy produce to their babies as they are learning to eat solids. We distribute it through the MV Community Services Family Center, Island Food Pantry or to families that contact us.
